  • Dexter Morgan

Dexter Morgan is played by American actor, Michael C. Hall, who was born on February 1st, 1971.  He grew up with his mum in Raleigh, North Carolina, after his father died of prostate cancer when he was twelve.

Aside from Dexter, Michael played popular character David Fisher, a closeted homosexual, in HBO’s Six Feet Under.  Before he started his film career he performed in theatre, including on Broadway, where he sang, danced and acted.  He also recently appeared in the film, Gamer, as the baddie.  He has won both an Actor’s Screen Guild Award and a Golden Globe for his performance as Dexter Morgan.

Michael has been married twice, to Broadway co-star Amy Spanger; they married in 2002 but filed for divorce four years later.  He also recently eloped with co-star Jennifer Carpenter in 2008, but in December 2010 they announced that they were getting divorced.  He is currently dating Michelle Johnson, who lives in North Carolina.

In 2010 it was announced that Michael was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer.  However, on April 25th, 2010 it was announced that he was fully cured.

  • Deborah Morgan

Deborah is played by American actress Jennifer Carpenter, born 7th December, 1979.  Jennifer was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky.  After school she attended the Juilliard school for arts in New York, and before she graduated she had already won a role on Broadway.

Before Dexter, Jennifer gained recognised, as well as an MTV award (amongst others) for her role in the horror flick, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Jennifer eloped with fellow co-star, Michael C. Hall, on New Year’s Eve 2008, but they have recently filed for divorce.  They have said to have parted on amicable terms.

  • Harry Morgan

Harry Morgan, who appears either as flashbacks or in Dexter’s mind, is played by American actor James Remar, born 31st December 1953.

Born as William James Remar in Boston, Massachusetts, James has often portrayed the villain in films; including sexually aggressive character Ajax in The Warriors, and real-life gangster Dutch Schultz in The Cotton Club.

Recently, his most notable role would be that of Richard Wright in Sex and The City.  He is the first man that promiscuous Samantha Jones falls for, and inadvertently breaks her heart.

James has been acting since 1978.

  • Lt. Maria LaGuerta

Maria LaGuerta is played by American actress Lauren Velez, born 2nd November 1964.  Lauren’s parents are both Puerto Rican who moved to New York in the 1950s.  While Lauren’s twin sister, Loraine, is also a notable actress, she also has 6 other brothers and sisters.  She grew up in Queens, New York.

While Lauren has appeared in films including I Like It Like That and an independent spanish film, she is more known for her television roles.  She played a cop in another television show, New York Undercover, and has appeared in shows including Medium, Ugly Betty and Numb3rs.

In 2006, Lauren won a Best Supporting Actress award at the Long Island International Film Expo for her role in independent film, Serial.

  • Angel Batista

Angel Batista is played by Puerto Rican actor David Zayas, born December 31st, 1969.

Although David was born in Puerto Rico, he was raised in Boston where he later joined the Air Force.  After his time in the Air Force he become a police officer, which has allowed him to develop as a character actor.   As well as appearing in television, David has been involved in theatre and film, and is a talent musician on the side, working alongside singers including Jason Mraz.

Aside from Dexter he (like co-star Lauren Velez) appeared in the television series, New York Undercover, as well as HBO prison drama, Oz, where he played a ruthless inmate.

David is married to fellow actress Liza Colon-Zayas and they live together in Los Angeles (where Dexter is filmed).

  • Vince Masuka

C.S. Lee, a Korean American actor, born 30th December 1970, plays Vince Masuka in Dexter.

C.S. Lee, aka Charles S Lee, was raised in Vancouver where his love for acting first began.  Later, he attended the Yale School of Drama and went on to performing in various theatre and television productions.

Aside from Dexter, C. S. has appeared in NBC’s Chuck and he played recurring character, Dr Ba in HBO’s The Sopranos.

He is married to Lara Cho.

  • Rita Morgan

Rita is played by American actress Julie Benz, born 1st May 1972.  She grew up in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where her family were all involved in figure ice-skating.  Her two siblings, Jeffrey and Jennifer were the 1987 US junior ice-skating champions and Julie herself came 13th in the US junior ice-staking championship.  However, when she was 14 she suffered from an stress fracture and had to take time off.

Although Julie always wanted to be an actress, her acting coach once said to her that she would never succeed because of her voice.  However, Julie said that this just made her work even harder, and she ended up graduating from New York University where she studied acting.

Aside from Dexter, Julie has appeared as vampire Darla in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer as well as many films including Jawbreaker, George of The Jungle 2 and Rambo.  Julie’s character, Rita, was killed off in the final episode of season four and she now has a starring role in new television show, No Ordinary Family.

For her role in Dexter, Julie won the 2006 Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Television Series.

In 1998 Julie married actor and voice actor John Kassir, but  she filed for divorce in 2007.
