For those who are a fan of the television show first and foremost, you may not know that Dexter is based on a series of books by Jeff Lindsay.

You’re missing out.  Big time.  So I suggest running to your nearest library/bookstore/serial killer’s home (he’s bound to have them all in hard-cover) and read them cover to cover.  Or…if you’re lazy check out the Dexter section on this webpage (but I’m still suggesting actually reading them).

For those who HAVE read the books you’ll know that they are dark, humorous and very close to going too far…just how we like it.  Sure Dexter doesn’t actually love Rita in the books (but she IS alive!) and sure we don’t get to eye-screw Michael C. Hall like we do in the television series…but they are amazing, no?

Well.  Be excited my little Dexterlings (any ideas for nicknames?).  Jeff Lindsay has announced he will be releasing the sixth book in the series in October.  I know that’s still a few months away…but doesn’t mean we can’t get excited now, right?

The book, titled Double Dexter has been described as having this plotline:

Dexter Morgan is not your average serial killer. He enjoys his day job as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department . . . but he lives for his nighttime hobby of hunting other killers. Dexter is therefore not pleased to discover that someone is shadowing him, observing him, and copying his methods. Dexter is not one to tolerate displeasure . . . in fact, he has a knack for extricating himself from trouble in his own pleasurable way.

In short?  Dexter is going to kick-arse, while chopping some up and juggling everything else on his plate at once.  What’s not to love?

What do you think of the book series?  Is it better than worse than the television show?  Are you excited for the new book?  Let me know in the comments!
